Introduction

Welcome to OrcaLicense, the utility which will help you manage your FlexNet licenses for Orcina software.

FlexNet Publisher (formerly FLEXlm) is a software-based licensing system from Revenera (formerly known as Flexera) which does not need any hardware device such as a dongle; instead, licenses are stored on either your machine or a server to which you have network access, in a protected area of disk set aside as trusted storage. Various properties of the machine (MAC address, hard drive serial number, etc) are used to uniquely identify it and associate it with the licenses in trusted storage.

Obtaining a license

When you are issued with software from Orcina, or you convert dongle-based licenses to FlexNet, you will be sent an email containing an activation ID. Entering this ID via OrcaLicense's activate facility will download securely the corresponding license information from Revenera's server and save it to your machine's trusted storage.

The online activation process requires internet communication with https://flex1677-fno.flexnetoperations.com/flexnet/services/ActivationService over the https port, 443. Note that this communication is only required during activation and deactivation.

Warning: The licenses in trusted storage are in essence what you have purchased or leased from us, and should be treated with due care and security. We cannot replace lost active licenses. In particular, if you wish to decommission a server, or relocate a VM or replace hardware etc, you must deactivate your licenses first and then reactivate them after making the changes when you are again ready to use them.

Local / floating licenses

Licenses come in two different sorts: local (commonly known as node-locked) and floating (on a server). These are given their own separate areas of trusted storage, and each area can only be modified by a piece of software set up to access that one area. Consequently, there are two separate forms of OrcaLicense: a local one for node-locked licenses and a server one for floating licenses. You may also have FlexNet licenses for software from other providers as well as Orcina: these are kept completely separate. OrcaLicense cannot access licenses from any other company, and no other company can access your Orcina licenses.

Note: Local licenses cannot be used on server editions of Windows. If you need to run Orcina software on a server edition of Windows you must use a floating license.

Per-seat licensing

Orcina programs are licensed on a per seat basis. If you have a local license for your program, you can run as many instances of that program as you like on the machine which has the license (subject to the constraints of the machine's capacity, of course). Users of floating licenses from a server will each require a separate floating license. When they have checked out this license they can again run as many copies of the licensed program as their machine can bear.
