Hoses and umbilicals

The line type wizard derives typical properties for hoses and umbilicals based on project data.

Warning: The values generated by the wizard are approximate, and are intended as first estimates for preliminary use. They are offered in good faith, but due to variations in properties between products they cannot be guaranteed. We recommend that you use suppliers' data where this is available.

There are three categories of hose available:

The single umbilical category assumes a construction of steel wire armour and thermoplastic hoses, with a specified outside diameter up to 250mm.

The size ranges listed here are indicative. OrcaFlex does not limit you to these values, but the data have been derived for a limited number of inner/outer diameters within these ranges, and departing significantly from them could generate misleading line type data.

The line type data derived by the wizard are calculated from empirically estimated relationships with the inner (or outer) diameter of the hose (or umbilical) of the form \begin{equation} y = a d^b \end{equation} where $d$ is the inner or outer diameter (as appripriate) and $b$ is an integer value.

There are only limited data available for low pressure hoses and fold-flat hoses. More data exist for high pressure hoses and umbilicals, but these have a rather large spread, indicated for each data item as the minimum and maximum of the ratio of the observed value to the fitted value.

The following line type data are derived by the wizard:
