OrcaFlex User Group 2009

In 2009 we returned to our now traditional seven venues: Paris, Perth, Kuala Lumpur, Houston, Stavanger, Rio and Aberdeen. It was lovely to see lots of familiar faces and to match faces to some we've known only as names. Thank you all for coming along.

This year we had nearly 300 attendees with most providing feedback response forms – thank you. Your thoughts and ideas are always welcome (at any time!) and always noted. The comments have been constructive, informative and invaluable as usual. The requests have now been added to our development list. For information, short and medium term developments for OrcaFlex can be found at the OrcaFlex Support page.

The feedback in brief:

  • Attendees found the days informative and useful. The mix of Orcina presentations, guest speakers and worked examples were still popular.
  • The presentation explaining the recent developments in OrcaFlex and future development was well received. As with previous years, most of the new features were a direct result of requests from the previous user group sessions. We hope you find the new features useful.
  • The support area receives many requests on how to determine hydrodynamic properties. The hydrodynamics presentation covered some of these issues and things to watch out for. This proved very popular with many requests for advanced copies of models.
  • Once again we covered the OrcaFlex fatigue analysis capability. This time we discussed how non-linear soils and hysteretic bending affect fatigue damage. A lot of discussion from the floor on this one.
  • There was also a presentation on advanced automation introducing the interfaces to OrcaFlex from Python and MATLAB.
  • We kept the final example session format that we introduced last year, giving more time and mixing longer worked examples with little hints and tips and a bit of theory. Again there was a demand for advanced copies of models so this is clearly a popular mix.

The guest speakers, all OrcaFlex users, were well received. Thank you to our guest speakers who took time out of their busy schedules to prepare and present: David Fielding & Neil Botterill (Prospect), Prof. Dave White & Zack Westgate (UWA), Cecep Hendra (Zee Eng.), Jamie McClellan & Chris Mungall (KBR), Anders Rødstøl (JP Kenny), José Pedrosa (Subsea7) and Cecile Melis (SBM).

Finally, we shall continue to hold these meetings annually and planning is already underway for 2010. The main user group meeting page will be updated with information shortly. We look forward to meeting you there once again.
